What Happens on the Day of Your White Card Course

Knowing the shape of the day removes most of the nerves, particularly if it has been a while since you sat any kind of assessment. Here is how a White Card day actually runs at our Haymarket centre.

Before you arrive

There is no pre-learning, no videos to watch and nothing to upload. The two things to sort out beforehand are your identification and your Unique Student Identifier. Create the USI free at usi.gov.au, and check that your identification documents add up to 100 points and are originals rather than copies.

Arrival and identification

The course runs 8:30am to 4:00pm at Level 5, 8 Quay Street in the Prince Centre, a short walk from Central Station and Railway Square. Arrive early enough to be seated by 8:30am, because the identification check happens first and cannot be skipped. A Statement of Attainment cannot be issued to someone whose identity has not been verified.

What you wear and what we provide

Wear comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes. Do not buy any personal protective equipment. We provide the hard hat, high visibility vest, safety goggles and earmuffs you need for the practical component, and their cost is already inside the course fee.

The training itself

The day covers the content of CPCWHS1001, which is the general construction induction unit. Broadly that means:

• Work health and safety legislation and who holds which duty on a site
• Identifying common construction hazards and the hierarchy of risk control
• Reading and interpreting safety signage and site documentation
• Safety communication, including toolbox talks and how to report a hazard
• Incident and emergency response procedures

It is delivered as a workshop rather than a lecture, so expect discussion, worked examples and hands on activities with the PPE.

How the assessment works

There is no single exam at the end. Assessment runs through the day and combines practical tasks, written questions, oral questions, document review and role plays. Your trainer marks everything in class. If you get something wrong, they will go over it with you and give you another attempt, because the goal is competency rather than catching you out.

The one firm requirement is English. Written and oral questions and role plays all have to be completed unaided, and interpreters are not permitted.

What you leave with

On successful completion you receive your CPCWHS1001 Statement of Attainment and your WorkSafe Statement of Training the same day, which together let you start on site immediately. Your physical plastic Construction Induction Card is then mailed to you by SafeWork NSW, usually within 2 to 4 weeks. You do not need the plastic card in hand to begin working, the same day paperwork is what a site will ask for.

If your plans change

You can move your booking to another date free of charge as long as you tell us more than 48 hours beforehand. We cannot refund no shows or cancellations after booking, so it is worth moving the date rather than missing the class.
