What ID Do You Need for a White Card in NSW?

Identification is the single most common reason someone is turned away from a White Card course, and it is entirely avoidable. The requirement is a 100 point check, and the points only count if the documents you bring meet a few specific conditions.

What the check has to prove

Between them, your documents need to establish a photo of you, your full name, your date of birth, your signature and your current residential address. A single document rarely covers all five, which is why you need a combination rather than just a licence.

Combinations that add up to 100

• Passport (70) plus bank statement (25) plus Medicare card (25) gives you 120
• Australian driver licence (40) plus bank card (25) plus phone account (25) plus bank statement (25) gives you 115

Notice that both examples clear 100 with room to spare. Bring more than you think you need, because a document that is out of date or in the wrong name is easier to absorb if you have a buffer.

Documents must be original and Australian issued

Photocopies, scans and photos on your phone are not accepted. Neither are screenshots of a banking app. Bring the physical document. With the single exception of passports, documents need to be Australian issued, which catches people out when they try to use an overseas bank card or utility account.

Overseas driver licences

A non Australian driver licence is only accepted if you have been in the country less than 6 weeks. Outside that window it carries no points at all, so if you have been here longer and your licence is your main photo ID, you will need to build your 100 points a different way, usually starting with your passport.

If you have just arrived in Australia

There is a sensible exemption. If you have been in Australia less than 6 weeks you do not need to reach 100 points. Bring your passport, one other form of identification and proof of your arrival date, such as an incoming passenger card or a boarding pass, and that is sufficient.

You also need a USI

Separate from identification, you need a Unique Student Identifier before any nationally recognised certificate can be issued to you. It is free, it takes a few minutes at usi.gov.au, and you only ever create one in your lifetime. Set it up before the day rather than in the classroom.
