Construction is one of the most common sources of work for people who have recently arrived in Sydney, and the White Card is the entry requirement. There is no visa restriction on obtaining one. International students, working holiday makers, skilled visa holders and new permanent residents can all complete the course.
The Construction Induction Card is a safety credential, not a work right. Holding one does not grant you permission to work, and your visa conditions still govern how many hours you may work and for whom. What the card does is satisfy the legal requirement that anyone carrying out construction work has completed general induction training.
The standard requirement is 100 points of original, Australian issued identification. That is difficult in your first weeks here, so there is an exemption. If you have been in Australia less than 6 weeks, bring:
Past 6 weeks the exemption no longer applies and you need the full 100 points. Your overseas driver licence stops counting at that point too, so most people build their points from a passport plus an Australian bank statement and a Medicare card. This is the part worth being honest about. You need strong spoken and written English, because the assessment includes written questions, oral questions and role plays, and interpreters are not permitted at any point. This is not an arbitrary rule. On a live construction site you have to understand a verbal safety instruction, read a sign and speak up about a hazard, so the assessment tests that directly.
If you are still building your English, it is better to wait than to attend and be unable to complete the assessment. Reading through the course content beforehand helps, and so does practising the vocabulary of hazards, signage and emergency procedures.
You need a Unique Student Identifier before a nationally recognised certificate can be issued. Create it free at usi.gov.au. You will need identification to set it up, and if you are a temporary resident your passport is usually the document to use.
Once issued, your card is valid for construction work in every state and territory, which matters if you move between cities for work. It has no expiry date, although it becomes void if you spend more than 2 consecutive years out of the construction industry.
